The jacket first appeared in a 1992 Ralph Lauren collection, which drew heavily from sailing and performance gear aesthetics. The jacket was officially reissued by Ralph Lauren in 2011, often in collaboration with the Japanese retailer BEAMS. This release helped solidify its iconic status and made it available to a wider audience.
Originally known as Anorak jacket, the nickname “Japanorak” was a combination of Japan and Anorak made famous by Lo Heads.

Like many vintage Polo pieces from the early 90s (e.g., Snow Beach, Stadium), the Japanorak became a significant item within the hip-hop and streetwear communities, championed by crew like the Lo Lifes.
The Japanorak jacket is expected to be brought back again in 2026.
