SPEAKING WITH : HARAHARA GARASE

We had a chance speaking to one of the few Singapore’s female custom painter, HARAHARA GARASE. In rare sights of local airbrusher and painter that works on helmets and motorbikes these days, let’s dig up some stories from the artist herself.

Give us a little introduction of yourself?

I am a custom painter based in Singapore. It has been 2 years since I started Harahara Garase. I specialised in painting and airbrushing motorcycles. However, I do accept other forms of canvas. For example, bicycles, helmets, etc.

How do you got started with custom painting and air brushing?

After graduating from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), I started customising sneakers at home. After a while, I felt like I wanted to do more than just sneakers. I was then introduced to TBRN Designs through a friend. From there on, Harahara Garase ventured into the kustom kulture/ motorcycle scene.

Is this a full time job? It it sufficient to lead a daily life?

Although I am a freelancer, I treat every project I received just like a fulltime job. For the amount of jobs that I’m working on currently, it is more than enough for my lifestyle.

We saw helmets, motorbikes, bicycles and sneakers. What’s the best canvas to work on?

One of the best experiences is working on motorcycle tanks and helmets as it gives me a lot of space.

Have you ever made an error on a commissioned job?

I feel like I’m a perfectionist but I’m still a human. I feel that the errors I’ve made helped me to be a better artist.

Ever feel like giving up at one point?

Life is honestly a rollercoaster ride, there are ups and downs. At the end of the day, what keeps me going is my drive and passion.

A craft that not many women out there would do, why did you?

All the more reason to be doing what I am doing! I am just happy to be doing what I love.

What is your personal favourite work?

My favourite piece is the Greek Mythology themed helmet.

We are sure this is not a “8 – 5pm” kind of job, how much time you need to spent on a project daily?

On average I spend 10 hours at work daily.

What’s that one dream or something you would want to achieve 5 years from now?

My dream is to open my own garage and make Harahara Garase known worldwide!
